What SKUs actually do in a multichannel setup
On a single platform, a SKU is mostly an internal reference, a way to identify a specific product or variant in your own systems. It's nice to have, but if it's missing or inconsistent, you can usually get by.
The moment you sell on two platforms, the SKU becomes the primary identifier that tells sync tools "this product on Etsy is the same product on Shopify." Missing SKUs on Etsy
Etsy doesn't require SKUs. Many sellers never add them because there's no visible reason to. Etsy works fine without them. But when you add Shopify to the mix, those empty SKU fields mean there's nothing to match on. The sync tool sees a product on Etsy with no identifier and a product on Shopify with no identifier, and has no way to know they're the same thing.
Different SKUs on each platform
Some sellers added SKUs to Etsy years ago using one convention, then used a different convention when they set up Shopify. The lavender candle is "LAV-CANDLE-001" on Etsy and "CNDL-LAV-01" on Shopify. They're the same product, but the system can't tell.
Duplicate SKUs
Sometimes the same SKU gets assigned to different products, especially in large catalogs where SKU assignment happened informally over time. When two different products share a SKU, sync will link the wrong items together and update the wrong stock counts.

Getting your SKUs right
If you're setting up multichannel selling for the first time, the best investment you can make is 30 minutes of SKU cleanup before you start syncing. The principles are simple.
Use the same SKU for the same product on both platforms. Make every SKU unique: no two different products should share a SKU. Include the variant in the SKU, so "LAV-CANDLE-SM" and "LAV-CANDLE-LG" are distinct identifiers, not just "LAV-CANDLE" for both sizes. And keep the format consistent. Pick a convention and stick with it.
